herpes zoster, also called shingles,is an infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus,a member of a group of DNA viruses.The disease is characterizes by a painful vesicular eruption along the area of distribution of the sensory nerves from one or more posterior ganglia.There is an increase frequency of herpes zoster infection among patients with weakened immune system and cancers,especially leukemias.The goals of herpe zoster management are to relieve the pain and to reduce or avoid complication,which include infection,scarring and postherpetic neuralgia and eye complication.Pain is contolled with analgesics,because adequate pain contorl during the acute phase helps to prevent persistant pain pattern.
